Privacy Policy

Montio is a video editor that runs on your device. The iPhone app and web editor process videos, photos, and audio locally, so your media is not uploaded to Montio and we never see it.
The short version
The Montio iPhone app does not collect, store, or transmit your personal information. There is no account, sign-in, advertising, or analytics SDK in the iPhone app. The web editor also needs no account and does not upload your media. The websites use Google Analytics to understand aggregate visits and coarse editor milestones, as described below.
Information we collect
The Montio app collects none. Montio has no servers that receive your app data. We do not collect your name, email, contacts, location, device identifiers, app usage analytics, or the content of your projects. Your media is never sent to us.
Website analytics
The Montio websites use separate Google Analytics streams to understand aggregate traffic and improve the product. Google may process information such as pages viewed, approximate location, browser and device type, and referral source. The web editor reports only coarse milestones such as a clip-count range, selected target-length bucket, music style, remix range, and successful export. It does not send filenames, exact clip durations, project identifiers, project content, error messages, photos, videos, audio, name, or email address to Google Analytics. Enhanced measurement is disabled for the editor stream. Google processes analytics data under its privacy policy.
Web editor storage
The web editor at app.montio.video copies imported media and project data into private browser storage (Origin Private File System) so local processing can survive a reload. That storage belongs to this browser profile and is not uploaded to Montio. Starting over resets the visible workspace but may leave its private local copy available to the browser; clearing site data for app.montio.video removes all locally stored Montio web projects and media. A browser may also evict local data when storage is scarce.
How your media is processed
All editing and AI features run on your device:
- AI Cut, Auto Shorts, and highlight detection — analyze your clips locally to find the best moments, reframe to vertical, enhance, and match colors.
- Captions — generated using Apple's Speech Recognition. On devices that support on-device recognition, Montio requests that the audio be transcribed on the device. On some older devices Apple may process the audio on Apple's servers to complete the transcription; in that case Apple's privacy policy applies. Montio itself never stores or transmits your audio.
- Caption translation — performed on your device using Apple's Translation framework. Your first use of a language may prompt a one-time on-device language download.
- Moments — if you allow photo access, Montio reads when and where your photos and videos were taken to find trips, big days and anniversaries, entirely on your device. To name a trip or an On this day moment, Montio sends that moment's approximate coordinates (never a photo) to Apple's geocoding service (once per moment, retried at most once a day if the lookup fails); Apple's privacy policy applies. Montio itself never stores or transmits your photos or their locations.
- Music, effects, and export — all rendering happens locally; finished videos are saved only where you choose (Photos, or a share sheet you invoke).
- Web AI Cut — browser media APIs analyze, select, preview, and export your clips locally. The web version does not currently provide captions or translation.
Permissions Montio asks for
Montio requests these permissions only to provide features you use, and only on your device. You can change any of them anytime in Settings → Montio.
- Photos — to let you import clips and photos and save finished videos.
- Camera & Microphone — to record clips and voiceovers within the app.
- Speech Recognition — to transcribe speech in your videos into captions, as described above.
Subscriptions and purchases
Montio offers an optional paid subscription (Montio Pro). Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Montio does not receive or store your payment information. Apple's terms and privacy policy govern the transaction, and you can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings.
Third parties
The Montio app includes no third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs. Apple provides the operating-system features above and processes App Store purchases. Separately, this website uses Google Analytics as disclosed above.
Children
Montio is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Montio handles data — for example, if a future version adds an optional feature that needs a server — we will update this page and the app's App Store privacy details in the same release, and revise the date above.
